Late Winter Camping in the Desert

I love shoulder season. Anyone who loves backpacking as much as I do, probably feel the same. The trails are long and empty, and unexpected conditions make for some interesting shots. This past weekend, the Ancient Lakes area of Eastern Washington beckoned with warm, sunny days and cold nights, patches of snow, icy paths, and spectacular sunsets. The wildflowers are still a few weeks away but birds were in abundance and it was fun to look at animal tracks in the snow.

Enjoy the sights. And if you think winter is only for sitting inside, think again. It's great out there on the shoulders!

Poison ivy - so pretty in winter!
